“Two brothers share childhood memories and grown-up dreams.”
Nick and Doug grew up as two of the five Wilhelm brothers on a farm in Leamington, Ontario. Now, in their 70’s, they remain as close as ever. Not only do they share a bond as brothers, but they also share a love for motorcycles. Big brother Nick taught Doug to ride at age nine and they both shared this passion for riding as long as their bodies allowed it. Nick has been involved with the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group for many years and Doug identifies as a “Harley man” through and through, with his room at Hospice decorated with just a small portion of his memorabilia collected over the years.
When Doug arrived at Hospice Erie Shores in early June, his daughter, Amie, reached out to their fellow riders to organize a small drive-by for her Dad. “We had no idea what to expect, but it was amazing to see what happened!” says Amie.

The motorcycle rally was more than just a drive-through – dozens of bikes rode together to salute Doug and Nick. They travelled the route from Kingsville to Leamington, driving past Nick’s house, then brought him along to the Erie Shores Residence.
Doug explained, “You could hear them coming from miles away – this low rumble.” He expected them to just loop through the roundabout in front of the Residence, where Doug, holding a picture of their Dad on his Indian motorcycle, was watching. But after they drove through, they parked the bikes, took off their helmets and came over to say hello and pay their respect. Much to Doug’s surprise as he greeted his fellow riders, he noticed his big brother Nick was among them! This wonderful sign of respect from their fellow motorcyclists moved Doug to tears describing how much this visit meant. “This bunch of tough-looking bikers are just a bunch of teddy bears.” said Doug.
Doug invited Nick back to his patio and shared with him how much he loves Hospice and how safe he feels in their care. A couple short weeks later, Nick himself was admitted to the Hospice, Erie Shores Residence. He settled in just down the hall from his little brother, just like when they were growing up – once again under the same roof.
The motorcycle drive-by was enjoyed so much, they decided to do it again – this time, with classic cars!

It was Nick’s daughter, Kristen, who jumped in to coordinate a Classic Car Rally. “I spoke to Gino from the Leamington Area Classic Cruisers, and he pulled the whole thing together in just two days!” A huge collection of vintage cars and vans drove through the property, honking and waving and giving the thumbs-up to Nick and Doug, who were out on the front patio for the event.
While in the Hospice Residence, the brothers have been making full use of their private patios, sharing time and long talks just like the good old days when they would sit on the well on their grandparents’ farm sharing watermelon. They enjoy being able to see the farm next door to Hospice from Doug’s patio, appreciating the “old school farming” on the neighbouring property, along with walks through the gardens with the family dogs.
Their family gathers with them, happy to be able to come and go anytime throughout the day – and with the option to stay overnight with Nick and Doug. They have hosted barbecue parties on the patios for as many friends and family as could come. Being here at the same time has been not only providing memorable care but a time of togetherness for the Wilhelm Family.
“Like so many large families, ours has been spread out for a while – Hospice has helped bring us back together in ways we haven’t been for years,” explains Nick, with his emotions clear in his voice. “Our family is together again!”
“In addition to this quality family time,” says Kristen, “Nick and Doug want for nothing; if they have a special request or mention something they especially love to any of the staff or volunteers, it’s there the next day!”
It’s not every day that two brothers can share this kind of time, care, and joy together. From the roar of motorcycle engines to the quiet moments with family on the patio, Nick and Doug have been surrounded by the people and passions they love most, and that’s The Hospice Way.
