The Hospice G.E.N.I.E. – Granting Exceptional N’ Impactful Experiences

The G.E.N.I.E. Transport Program, a partnership between Hospice and Essex-Windsor EMS, helps patients receiving Hospice care to experience special trips and outings.

Since the program was launched, we have been able to provide countless rides across Windsor and Essex County for our patients, including the wedding of Katie and Peter last summer.

Katie and Peter had been planning their wedding for months, but when Katie’s Mom, Jacqueline, was admitted to the Hospice Residence in June of 2025, everything went into “high gear.”

“It was so important to all of us to have my Mom at the wedding,” says Katie. “But, she was so weak, we didn’t know how we could safely get her to our backyard ceremony in Belle River.”

In a unique twist of fate, Peter saw a story online that same week about the Hospice G.E.N.I.E. Program, and it seemed like the perfect solution.

As a paramedic with Essex-Windsor EMS, Peter knew exactly who to call, and within just a few days, the plans for Jacqueline’s ride were in place.

“It was so special to have her there. She was comfortable and safe, and so happy be with her family,” says Katie.

Volunteer EMS team members Daina and Sarah, Peter’s co-workers at EMS, came together to make the journey possible, bringing Jacqueline to the ceremony in Katie and Peter’s backyard and ensuring she didn’t miss the opportunity to witness the celebration and make lasting memories.

For Katie and Peter and their whole family, that day shared with Jacqueline is a memory that they will always cherish.

A celebration, a family brought together – that’s The Hospice Way!
